Frequently Asked Questions

What is rucking?

Rucking is simply walking around with a weighted backpack. It originated with the military, which often employs rucking to train soldiers to carry heavy equipment for a certain distance. GORUCK has an excellent video describing rucking here.

Why would anyone want to ruck?

Rucking has many health benefits, as it helps strengthen your shoulders, core, calves, and quads. When you ruck, you actively develop your body’s ability to carry weight, working several muscle groups together. What you’re left with is practical strength that helps you do real work.

It is also a form of social exercise. Unlike running, rucking allows you to talk with your exercise partners, and helps build stronger bonds between family, friends, and neighbors.

How do I get started rucking?

All it takes is a backpack with weight in it. Some people use a weight plate like this, while others use bricks, or sandbags inside their ruck.

While there are purpose-built rucksacks, you can use any backpack sturdy enough to hold weight.
